Who is Saraswati?

30 Days of Devotion
Day 1: Who is Saraswati?

Saraswati is an ancient goddess whose worship can be traced back to the early Vedic period (around 1500BCE), when she was the genius locus of the river that bore her name. Today she is known mostly as the Hindu goddess of wisdom and learning, but she is also worshipped by Buddhists and Jaina for much the same reasons. The Saraswati river is long gone, but the goddess has remained as a patroness of wisdom and learning, both earthly and mundane. The goddess herself is incredibly popular, and can count her worshippers in the millions.
